Jane’s Dr. Parnassus TIFF Adventure
Now, where to start? Ok, we’ll start at the beginning. I had gotten my tickets to the Saturday screening of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus at TIFF. I almost hadn’t been able to get tickets because they went so fast that it wasn’t until a few days before the screening few more were released and I was able to purchase them for me and my daughters. I emailed Theresa and told her that I was going to be able to go on the 19th and she was so happy for me and so glad to know that I would be there to represent the site. It looked as if I wouldn’t be able to meet the Gilliams as she had hoped since it was thought they would not be there for the September 19th screening. Though disappointed, I was so excited to be getting to see the movie.
Then, I checked my email late on Thursday afternoon and what did I find but an URGENT email from Theresa telling me that I had been invited to the Gala Premier, Red Carpet and After Party for Doctor Parnassus as the guest of the Gilliams and would I like to go? Oh. My. Lord!! I was to meet Amy Gilliam at 3:00 p.m. in the lobby of The Four Seasons Hotel in Yorkville the next day (Friday the 18th,) get to spend a few minutes with her, then go get my tickets. Now, calm person that I am, I went to bed at a reasonable time and fell asleep right away. That is, I fell asleep until about 3:00 a.m. when my eyes popped wide open …sigh. I continued to drift in and out of sleep the rest of the night.
Friday morning came and I had my hair done and was getting ready to go. My older daughter and her friend were at the house as they were going to drive me downtown because parking is soooo bad, and my younger daughter came by to see how things were going. Everything was going smoothly until I announced I was going to wear flats instead of heels. I hate heels. After a collective gasp from the room, the girls decide to take it upon themselves to right this grievous error on my part and they headed out, only to return with several pair of dressy flat shoes. You know that you have come up in the world when you have “personal shoppers.” Their mission accomplished, I made one last check of my email and there was a message from Theresa. She had just found out that I needed to pick up my tickets by 2:00 p.m. Uh-oh! I checked and it’s around 1:30 p.m. I live in the “burbs” and it can take up to an hour to get into the city core. So, off we rushed. I got there around 2:30 and picked up the envelope with the ticket from the concierge. The envelope also contained a note from Amy Gilliam asking me to go to another hotel, where she was getting her hair done. So, I grabbed a taxi and off I went. I arrived at the hotel, but there was no Amy! The hotel was TIFF affiliated, so I did some asking around. No, they did not know where Amy was, however, they called her cell for me because she had left her cell number in her note to me. They called for me because I couldn’t call her UK cell number (even though she was right there in the area with me) since I don’t have international calling on my cell. My cell is very “old school”, no internet, no camera…in fact to charge it, I just wind the thing up! No really, but damn close. Thankfully, I found out that Amy was at Salon Daniel. So I hopped in another cab and off I went.
I arrived at Salon Daniel just as they were finishing up Amy’s make-up. She looked stunning. She has very beautiful eyes. And, you couldn’t meet a nicer person than Amy Gilliam. She’s always smiling, positive; a complete delight. We chatted for a bit and I took a few photos and as we walked back to The Four Seasons, Amy told me what to expect and to follow her. Easy enough.
We got to The Four Seasons and Amy went up to her room to dress. I took a seat off to the side of the lobby to wait for her. After a while, Christopher Plummer and his wife came down and waited in the lobby where it was starting to fill up with TIFF reps, etc. After a bit they headed over to a little café off to the side to just sit for a bit, then came back about ten minutes later. I got the chance to take a couple of photos of Christopher and, though not my best photos, I was pleased. Then Terry and Amy came down and I headed to the centre of the lobby where I was discreetly advised by security not to take pictures. I explained that I had been asked to take photos but he insisted, saying it was a “privacy matter.” Well, ok…Amy came over and introduced me to Christopher Plummer and his wife. Amy told Christopher and his wife that I here representing the best website in the world and that people all over the world are getting involved with this movie. The Plummers were very gracious and impressed with the site and all we are doing. It was so great to be introduced to Christopher Plummer. I have had a crush on him since The Sound of Music and had even seen him perform at Stratford in Ontario.
Now, Amy took me over to meet Terry. He was surrounded. We had a brief hello and handshake. Tell me, can life get any better than this? Amy wanted me to be able to ride over to the premier with them, but it turned out that there wasn’t enough room in the car, so she asked if I could follow them out so I could take pictures then go back in and go to the other exit and grab a cab and ask them to drop me off at the Red Carpet area. I was to tell them that I was to walk the Red Carpet! Yes, you heard me right. I was walking the Red Carpet at The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Gala premier at TIFF! As I walked out with them to take photos the crowd was screaming “TERRY! TERRY!” I wish I had gotten a photo of it but I had to turn right around and run for the other exit and my cab. I did so and took off for the Roy Thomson Hall.
I arrived at Roy Thomson Hall, but the cab didn’t let me off at the Red Carpet area so I had to ask a TIFF staffer where the Red Carpet area was. I explained to the staff member from TIFF that I had been asked by Terry and Amy Gilliam to walk the red carpet with them. I was afraid that I might have trouble because I had no pass or anything, but she got on her headphones and spoke to someone and advised me to go farther up and speak to “so and so” (who was just the sweetest guy) and off I went. I headed down the block to the other side of Roy Thomson Hall. The staffer told me that he had NEVER seen a crowd like this trying to get in to see a movie at TIFF and that there were even more people here than were trying to get into Oprah’s Precious. We got to one of the barriers at the far end and he left me while he went to check out my story. There were only a few people as I was still nowhere near the Red Carpet. As I was standing there waiting, who walked up, but Rachel McAdams! I believe she was going to see Dr. Parnassus and was entering the theatre through the back. Anyway, I got told all was clear and we ran across the lot to the Red Carpet. (God I love flat shoes!) By the time I got there, Amy and Terry had already arrived and were working their way down the carpet. I can’t tell you the thrill it was being there. A once in a lifetime experience. I got little snippets of questions and answers, and was watching how the actors were interacting with the press and seeing how the people behind the actors work their magic. It was all very professional and exciting.
Once the Red Carpet was finished we headed to the Green Room. As we were walking down the hall I asked Amy how her nerves were holding up. She gave me a grimace. We were in the Green Room only for a short time. I ended up on the wrong end of the room for taking many photos, but did get a few. Then there was an announcement, “Out this door if you are going onstage, if you are going to the theatre, out that door.” So out “that” door I went.
The theatre was full by the time we were seated and I found myself being seated in the section with the cast! The lights dimmed and Piers Handling, the Director and CEO of TIFF came out and introduced Terry to a great amount of applause. Terry spoke warmly of Heath Ledger and how Amy wouldn’t let him give up on his movie after Heath’s death. He introduced everyone with very kind words, but especially centred on the “great Canadian icon”, Christopher Plummer. The movie then started. It was just wonderful. It was so visually stunning and imaginative. The cast was amazing and Heath Ledger was wonderful. The movie looked as if it was filmed like as it was originally intended. The introduction of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell was seamless. The movie ended to great applause.
After the screening, we waited around on the mezzanine and Amy came over to see how I was doing. I congratulated her and we had a hug (she is soooo sweet). After a while we headed down to leave. Since we still had the no room in the car situation, lol, she gave me the address for the club that was hosting the After Party then had the TIFF representative get a taxi for me (their treat)! I arrived at the restaurant and Boy, that green wrist band they gave me worked wonders! The velvet rope came down pretty quickly. I headed up to the enclosed roof top. There were U shaped sectional sofas on the right side and then it was open on the left side with the bar in the back.
Lily, Andrew and Terry were already there and sitting together with friends in the first sectional. Verne arrived later in the evening. I mingled among the guests and nibbled on tasty hors d’oeuvres, then settled down in the section just next to Terry where I had a very nice conversation with Cassandra Sawtell’s mother. Cassandra was a cutie. She took my camera and snapped a great photo of Andrew Garfield. Later as the crowd was thinning out I went over to Amy and told her I was heading home. I thanked her very much for the wonderful time. And, it truly had been a wonderful time. As always, she was very sweet and gave me a big hug. I left the party and headed on home.
As I mentioned earlier, I had tickets to see Dr. Parnassus with my daughters for the Saturday screening at the Elgin Theatre I was looking forward to seeing it again. A TIFF representative introduced the film and then to my surprise, Terry was there! He was greeted with thunderous applause and after a brief intro by him we settled in to watch the movie. I don’t know if it was the smaller venue or a better sound system, but I enjoyed the movie so much more the second time around. There were many hoots of laughter. It was a great crowd. When it was over, Terry came out for a little Q&A. One of the questions asked was how he got around Heath Ledger’s death and he also gave insight into a couple of the scenes. I should also mention that my daughters quite often have different taste in movies than I, however, they both enjoyed this movie so much. I was anxious to hear what they thought so I asked my daughter Christina to add some of her thoughts on the movie here for you. So, I’m adding Christina’s thoughts below after I sign off here.
I want to thank Theresa for setting up this wonderful adventure. Hugs.
Amy, I can’t thank you enough for being so down to earth and making this so easy for me. It was very hectic but you would never know from your demeanour that your movie was having its North American premier that night. You always had a smile on your face and no matter how busy you were there wasn’t one venue where you didn’t come to me and ask how I was doing and check that everything was ok. I truly appreciated that. I had the best time of my life. This is something I will cherish and never forget. Hugs.
Thoughts From Jane’s Daughter Christina About Her Favourite Parts Of Dr. Parnassus:
I liked the idea of the medieval pageant wagon and the traveling show. That established quite clearly and quickly that this movie would have to do with themes of morality, Heaven and Hell.
I loved the contrast between the griminess of most of the locations in the real world, to the beautiful richness of color of the Imaginarium.
I loved that the devil was not as clearly portrayed as the ultimate evil, that he was constantly giving Dr. Parnassus chances to triumph. Dr. Parnassus was, at his root a flawed man, and Mr. Nick was almost honourable in his dealings with him, that the roles of good and evil were hazy and interchangeable. His dejected reaction to winning Valentina was very interesting, as if Mr. Nick enjoyed the battle more than the outcome. The pseudo camaraderie of sorts that Mr. Nick and Dr. Parnassus was interesting as well, it made you aware of the fact that this was a long and tumultuous relationship, that the battle has and will rage on for a long time.
I thought that the introduction of the 3 “other” Tonys was seamless. Of course, in everyone’s imagination, there are no rules. It didn’t feel out of place, and made for some humorous moments. Who doesn’t love watching an actor having to contemplate the strangeness of his own face? I thought Colin Farrell’s Tony being dejected at his image was a damn riot.
Speaking of funny, the Russians being amazed at speaking English in the Imaginarium, Anton dressed up in a fat suit and Percy in blackface and an afro, and the image of Tony at his children’s charity event being caught beating up Child Anton, gave me the biggest laughs. That and the nudge-nudge-wink-wink at The Lumberjack Song that had bobbies in skirts singing and dancing. That did not fail to get the audience cheering. Lovely.
